THE ONE THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY

This photograph is of Ethel King colouring a mounted specimen of a Queensland Groper, Epinephelus lanceolatus, 1925.

In 1925, the Fiji Government sent some fish to the Australian Museum to be mounted for the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition. The largest specimen was this groper at a whopping 2 metres long and weighing over 160 kilograms. The fish skin was fitted over a plaster cast and then coloured by Ethel King, a skilled artist. Photo held by the Australian Museum Archives.
